DUI/DWI clients who are involved in drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers are either there by their own choice, but generally in drug and alcohol treatment due to a mandated court order. DUI/DWI clients, particularly first-time offenders may be ordered to rehab either in place of other consequences or as a part of a sentence. DUI/DWI clients may benefit greatly from treatment instead of being punished for his or her crimes, and so can the court system. It has been verified that people who are treated for substance abuse issues as an alternative to other penalties being forced upon them have much better chances of remaining out from the courts than those people who are fined, ordered to time in jail, etc. In drug rehab facilities DUI/DWI clients can establish why they abuse drugs and alcohol, to be able to address these problems in order to find resolution for the actual conditions and circumstances within their lives which set off their drug abuse. This can certainly save lives, not only the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but those who may be affected by their substance abuse if they drive while drunk or high in the future.
