Outpatient treatment gives treatment clients the ability to maintain certain responsibilities and elements of their way of life while taking part in alcohol and drug treatment services. Outpatient treatment is a moderate amount of rehabilitation, and should not be mistaken for the degree of treatment offered within an inpatient or residential treatment setting that is significantly more intensive. Outpatient treatment could be ideal for someone who has a brief history of drug abuse as an example, but will almost certainly not be adequate for someone whose treatment needs exceed what outpatient treatment is prepared to offer. Individuals involved in drug abuse often require an extreme environmental change, because most of the things that trigger their drug and alcohol use are strictly environmental. For instance, if someone is being physically or emotionally mistreated and this is triggering their drug or alcohol use, there is no way for any treatment efforts to succeed if they go back to such conditions each day. In outpatient treatment, clients can engage in group and one-on-one counseling, in addition to family counseling services. In outpatient treatment, most centers will provide services six or seven days a week on either a part time or full-time basis for 30 days or longer in some cases.
