Dual diagnosis can be a situation whereby two independent disorders are present, and most often describes a co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis can help someone who may possibly not have been capable of being helped previously, finish substance abuse because they can be correctly diagnosed and helped. Their mental health disorder could have been misdiagnosed, undiagnosed, or treated incorrectly that may have prompted and resulted in their substance abuse problems. Establishing the reality that someone is in fact a dual diagnosis client not simply helps establish an effective treatment course for them, but will also help clients better determine what triggered their substance abuse and how to prevent it in the future. Handling dual diagnosis may be a more extensive process than a typical drug rehab program, and folks with a dual diagnosis might be required to take part in a substantial aftercare program which may include appropriate medical support along with further treatment services. Being clinically determined to have co-occurring disorders doesn't mean that the individual must be medicated through out their lives either, and in reality a lot of people with a dual diagnosis experience far better results when treated holistically and when alternative treatment solutions are employed.
