Dual diagnosis is a circumstance in which two independent disorders exist, and most typically denotes a co-occurring drug abuse and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis will help someone that might not have been able to be helped in the past, stop drug abuse by being properly diagnosed and treated. Their mental health disorder could have been misdiagnosed, undiagnosed, or treated incorrectly that may have prompted and resulted in their substance abuse issues. Establishing the fact that someone is actually a dual diagnosis client not just helps establish an effective treatment course for them, but could also help clients better understand what caused their drug abuse and the way to prevent it later on. Handling dual diagnosis can be a more extensive process than the usual typical drug rehab program, and folks who have a dual diagnosis might be required to take part in a substantial aftercare program which may include appropriate medical support in addition to further rehabilitation services. Being diagnosed with co-occurring disorders doesn't imply that the person will have to be medicated for the remainder of their lives either, and in reality many individuals who have a dual diagnosis experience much better results when treated holistically and when alternative therapy is employed.
