Dual diagnosis can be a situation in which two independent disorders exist, and most often describes a co-occurring drug or alcohol use and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis will help someone who may not have been capable of being helped previously, put an end to drug or alcohol abuse because they can be accurately diagnosed and helped. Their mental health disorder may have been misdiagnosed, not diagnosed at all, or treated incorrectly that may have triggered and resulted in their substance abuse problems. Establishing the truth that someone is actually a dual diagnosis client not only helps establish an efficient treatment course for them, but could also help clients better understand what led to their substance abuse and the way to prevent it later on. Addressing dual diagnosis is often a more extensive process than a typical drug rehab program, and people who have a dual diagnosis may need to take part in a substantial aftercare program that might include appropriate medical support and also continued rehab services. Being diagnosed with co-occurring disorders doesn't mean that the person should be medicated for the remainder of their lives either, and in reality many people who have a dual diagnosis experience more effective outcomes when treated holistically and when alternative therapy is utilized.
