DUI/DWI clients who are involved in drug treatment programs are either there by their own choice, but more often than not in alcohol and drug treatment as part of a mandatory order from the court. DUI/DWI clients, especially initial offenders could possibly be ordered to rehabilitation either instead of other consequences or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients may benefit greatly from treatment as opposed to being punished for his or her crimes, and so can the judicial system. It has been determined that individuals who are treated for drug abuse issues instead of other penalties being enforced upon them have far better odds of staying out of the court system than those people who are fined, ordered to jail time, etc. In drug rehabilitation centers DUI/DWI clients can ascertain why they abuse drugs and alcohol, to enable them to address these issues and find resolution to the actual conditions and circumstances in their lives which trigger their drug abuse. This could truly save lives, not only the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but those who may be affected by their drug or alcohol use if they drive while drunk or high later on.
