DUI/DWI clients that are taking part in drug rehabilitation centers are either there by their own choice, but usually in alcohol and drug treatment due to a mandatory order from the court. DUI/DWI clients, specifically first-time offenders may be ordered to treatment either in lieu of other penalties or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients may benefit greatly from treatment as an alternative to being punished because of their crimes, and so can the court system. It has been established that those who are treated for substance abuse issues as opposed to other penalties being enforced upon them have far better chances of staying out from the courts than those who are fined, ordered to time in jail, etc. In drug rehabilitation programs DUI/DWI clients can determine why they abuse drugs and alcohol, to be able to address these issues in order to find resolution for the actual conditions and circumstances in their lives which trigger their drug abuse. This can truly save lives, not just the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but people that may be affected by their substance abuse if they drive while intoxicated later on. It's a real second opportunity for DUI/DWI clients.
