DUI/DWI clients who are involved in drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs are either there by their own choice, but more often than not in drug and alcohol rehabilitation due to a mandated order from the court. DUI/DWI clients, particularly first-time offenders may be ordered to treatment either in lieu of other penalties or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients may benefit greatly from rehab as an alternative to being punished because of their crimes, and so can the court system. It has been verified that individuals who are treated for substance abuse issues as opposed to other penalties being forced upon them have much better chances of staying out from the court system than those who find themselves fined, ordered to prison time, etc. In alcohol and drug treatment facilities DUI/DWI clients can establish why they abuse drugs and alcohol, to be able to address these issues and find resolution for the actual conditions and circumstances inside their lives which trigger their substance abuse.
