DUI/DWI clients that are involved in alcohol and drug rehabilitation programs are generally there by their own choice, but most of the time in drug rehabilitation due to a mandated court order. DUI/DWI clients, specifically first-time offenders may be required to go to treatment either instead of other consequences or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients can benefit greatly from rehab as an alternative to being punished for his or her crimes, and so can the judicial system. It has been determined that people who are treated for substance abuse issues as opposed to other penalties being enforced upon them have much better chances of remaining out of the courts than those who find themselves fined, ordered to time in jail, etc. In alcohol and drug treatment programs DUI/DWI clients can establish why they abuse drugs and alcohol, in order to address these problems and find resolution for the actual situations and circumstances within their lives which prompt their substance abuse. This can truly save lives, not only the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but people who may be affected by their drug or alcohol use when they drive while drunk or high later on. It's a real second opportunity for DUI/DWI clients.
