DUI/DWI clients that are taking part in alcohol and drug treatment programs are either there on their own accord, but usually in drug and alcohol treatment as part of a mandatory court ruling. DUI/DWI clients, particularly first-time offenders could be required to go to rehabilitation either in place of other penalties or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients can benefit greatly from rehab as opposed to being punished because of their crimes, and so can the judicial system. It has been established that individuals who are treated for drug or alcohol use issues instead of other penalties being enforced upon them have far better chances of remaining out of the courts than people who find themselves fined, ordered to incarceration, etc. In drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs DUI/DWI clients can ascertain why they abuse drugs and alcohol, in order to address these issues and find resolution to the actual situations and circumstances inside their lives which prompt their drug abuse. This could truly save lives, not only the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but people who may be affected by their drug or alcohol use whenever they drive while under the influence later on. It's a real second opportunity for DUI/DWI clients.
