DUI/DWI clients who are involved in drug treatment programs are generally there by their own choice, but generally in alcohol and drug rehabilitation due to a mandated court order. DUI/DWI clients, specifically first-time offenders may be required to go to rehabilitation either in place of other penalties or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients will benefit greatly from treatment instead of being punished for their crimes, and so can the court system. It has been established that people who are treated for substance abuse issues as an alternative to other penalties being enforced upon them have much better odds of staying out of the court system than those people who are fined, ordered to time in jail, etc. In drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs DUI/DWI clients can ascertain why they abuse alcohol and drugs, so that they can address these problems in order to find resolution to the actual conditions and circumstances inside their lives which trigger their substance abuse. This can truly save lives, not only the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but those that may be affected by their drug or alcohol use when they drive while intoxicated later on. It's a real second opportunity for DUI/DWI clients.
