Dual diagnosis is a circumstance whereby two independent disorders are present, and most often denotes a co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis will help someone that might not have been capable of being helped during the past, put an end to substance abuse by being accurately diagnosed and helped. Their mental health disorder may have been misdiagnosed, undiagnosed, or mistreated which could have triggered and resulted in their drug abuse problems. Establishing the reality that someone is in fact a dual diagnosis client not just helps establish an efficient course of treatment for them, but will also help clients better understand what caused their substance abuse and the way to prevent it in the future. Addressing dual diagnosis might be a more extensive process compared to a typical drug rehab program, and people who have a dual diagnosis may need to participate in a substantial aftercare program that might include proper medical support as well as further rehabilitation services. Being diagnosed with co-occurring disorders doesn't imply the individual must be medicated through out their lives either, and in reality lots of people with a dual diagnosis experience much better outcomes when treated holistically and when alternative therapy is utilized.
