DUI/DWI clients who are involved in alcohol and drug treatment programs are generally there by their own choice, but more often than not in drug and alcohol treatment as part of a mandated court ruling. DUI/DWI clients, specifically first-time offenders could possibly be ordered to rehab either instead of other penalties or as a part of a sentence. DUI/DWI clients will benefit greatly from rehabilitation rather than being punished because of their crimes, and so can the judicial system. It has been determined that those who are treated for substance abuse issues as opposed to other penalties being enforced upon them have far better odds of staying out from the court system than those people who are fined, ordered to incarceration, etc. In drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs DUI/DWI clients can determine why they abuse alcohol and drugs, in order to address these problems in order to find resolution to the actual situations and circumstances in their lives which trigger their drug or alcohol use. This could truly save lives, not just the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but those who may be impacted by their drug abuse if they drive while intoxicated in the foreseeable future.
