Dual diagnosis is a situation whereby two independent disorders exist, and most typically denotes a co-occurring drug or alcohol use and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis can help a person that may not have been capable of being helped during the past, put an end to drug or alcohol abuse by being correctly diagnosed and helped. Their mental health disorder might have been misdiagnosed, not diagnosed at all, or treated incorrectly that may have prompted and led to their drug or alcohol use issues. Establishing the reality that someone is actually a dual diagnosis client not just helps establish a highly effective treatment plan for them, but could also help clients better understand what triggered their drug abuse and how to prevent it later on. Addressing dual diagnosis may be a more extensive process compared to a typical drug rehab program, and folks who have a dual diagnosis might be required to take part in a substantial aftercare program that might include proper medical support along with continued treatment services. Being identified as having co-occurring disorders doesn't signify the person should be medicated for the rest of their lives either, and actually a lot of people who have a dual diagnosis experience much better outcomes when treated holistically and when alternative treatment methods are utilized.
