DUI/DWI clients that are involved in alcohol and drug treatment programs are either there by their own choice, but generally in drug and alcohol rehabilitation as part of a mandated court order. DUI/DWI clients, especially first-time offenders might be ordered to rehab either in place of other penalties or as a part of a sentence. DUI/DWI clients can benefit greatly from treatment as opposed to being punished for their crimes, and so can the court system. It has been established that people who are treated for substance abuse issues rather than other penalties being forced upon them have much better odds of remaining out from the court system than people who find themselves fined, ordered to incarceration, etc. In drug and alcohol rehabilitation facilities DUI/DWI clients can establish why they abuse drugs and alcohol, so that they can address these problems in order to find resolution for the actual conditions and circumstances in their lives which trigger their substance abuse. This may certainly save lives, not only the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but people who may be impacted by their substance abuse should they drive while drunk or high later on. It's a real second opportunity for DUI/DWI clients.
