DUI/DWI clients that are taking part in alcohol and drug treatment centers are generally there by their own choice, but usually in drug and alcohol rehab due to a mandated court order. DUI/DWI clients, especially first-time offenders could be required to go to treatment either instead of other consequences or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients can benefit greatly from rehabilitation as opposed to being punished for his or her crimes, and so can the court system. It has been proven that individuals who are treated for substance abuse issues rather than other penalties being forced upon them have much better odds of remaining out of the courts than those who are fined, ordered to prison time, etc. In drug rehabilitation centers DUI/DWI clients can determine why they abuse drugs and alcohol, so that they can address these issues and find resolution for the actual conditions and circumstances in their lives which trigger their substance abuse. This will truly save lives, not only the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but those who may be impacted by their substance abuse if they drive while under the influence in the future. This is a real second chance for DUI/DWI clients.
