Dual diagnosis is a circumstance whereby two independent disorders are present, and most often describes a co-occurring drug or alcohol use and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis may help someone who might possibly not have been able to be helped previously, finish drug abuse by being properly diagnosed and treated. Their mental health disorder might have been misdiagnosed, not diagnosed at all, or treated incorrectly that may have triggered and led to their drug or alcohol use issues. Establishing the reality that someone is in fact a dual diagnosis client not just helps establish a highly effective treatment course for them, but could also help clients better know what caused their drug abuse and the way to prevent it in the foreseeable future. Handling dual diagnosis can be a more extensive process compared to a typical drug rehab program, and people who have a dual diagnosis might need to take part in an extensive aftercare program that might include appropriate medical support in addition to further rehab services. Being identified as having co-occurring disorders doesn't mean that the person should be medicated for the remainder of their lives either, and in reality many people with a dual diagnosis experience much better outcomes when treated holistically and when alternative treatment solutions are employed.
