DUI/DWI clients who are taking part in alcohol and drug treatment facilities are either there on their own accord, but usually in drug and alcohol treatment due to a mandatory order from the court. DUI/DWI clients, particularly first-time offenders may be ordered to treatment either instead of other penalties or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients can benefit greatly from treatment as an alternative to being punished for his or her crimes, and so can the court system. It has been verified that individuals who are treated for drug abuse issues instead of other penalties being forced upon them have far better odds of remaining out of the court system than those who are fined, ordered to prison time, etc. In drug rehabilitation programs DUI/DWI clients can establish why they abuse drugs and alcohol, to be able to address these issues and find resolution to the actual situations and circumstances within their lives which prompt their substance abuse. This will certainly save lives, not only the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but those that may be impacted by their substance abuse if they drive while under the influence later on.
