Dual diagnosis can be a situation whereby two independent disorders exist, and most typically describes a co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis can help an individual who might possibly not have been able to be helped during the past, finish drug or alcohol abuse because they can be accurately diagnosed and treated. Their mental health disorder may have been misdiagnosed, undiagnosed, or treated incorrectly that could have prompted and resulted in their drug abuse problems. Establishing the reality that someone is actually a dual diagnosis client not just helps establish an effective treatment plan for them, but will also help clients better determine what led to their drug abuse and ways to prevent it in the future. Handling dual diagnosis may be a more extensive process than the usual typical drug rehab program, and individuals who have a dual diagnosis may need to take part in an extensive aftercare program which might include proper medical support along with further treatment services. Being diagnosed with co-occurring disorders doesn't imply that the individual should be medicated for the remainder of their lives either, and actually many individuals who have a dual diagnosis experience far better outcomes when treated holistically and when alternative treatment methods are utilized.
