Dual diagnosis can be a circumstance in which two independent disorders exist, and most often describes a co-occurring drug or alcohol use and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis may help someone who may not have been able to be helped during the past, end substance abuse by being correctly diagnosed and treated. Their mental health disorder might have been misdiagnosed, not diagnosed at all, or treated incorrectly that could have triggered and resulted in their drug or alcohol use problems. Establishing the fact that someone is actually a dual diagnosis client not merely helps establish an effective course of treatment for them, but can also help clients better know what led to their substance abuse and the way to prevent it in the foreseeable future. Addressing dual diagnosis may be a more extensive process when compared to a typical drug rehab program, and people who have a dual diagnosis might be required to participate in an extensive aftercare program which might include appropriate medical support along with further rehab services. Being clinically determined to have co-occurring disorders doesn't signify the person must be medicated through out their lives either, and in fact many individuals with a dual diagnosis experience much better results when treated holistically and when alternative treatment solutions are utilized.
