DUI/DWI clients that are involved in alcohol and drug rehabilitation programs are generally there by their own choice, but more often than not in drug and alcohol treatment as part of a mandated court ruling. DUI/DWI clients, particularly first-time offenders may be required to go to treatment either in place of other penalties or as a part of a sentence. DUI/DWI clients will benefit greatly from rehabilitation instead of being punished because of their crimes, and so can the court system. It has been established that individuals who are treated for drug or alcohol use issues as an alternative to other penalties being forced upon them have greater chances of staying out of the courts than those who are fined, ordered to time in jail, etc. In drug rehab programs DUI/DWI clients can determine why they abuse alcohol and drugs, to be able to address these issues and find resolution for the actual situations and circumstances inside their lives which trigger their substance abuse. This could certainly save lives, not just the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but people that may be affected by their drug or alcohol use if they drive while under the influence later on. It's a real second opportunity for DUI/DWI clients.
