DUI/DWI clients who are involved in alcohol and drug rehab programs are either there by their own choice, but generally in drug and alcohol treatment due to a mandated court ruling. DUI/DWI clients, specifically first-time offenders might be required to go to rehab either instead of other consequences or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients can benefit greatly from rehab instead of being punished because of their crimes, and so can the judicial system. It has been proven that individuals who are treated for drug or alcohol use issues instead of other penalties being forced upon them have greater chances of remaining out of the court system than those who find themselves fined, ordered to incarceration, etc. In drug and alcohol treatment centers DUI/DWI clients can determine why they abuse drugs and alcohol, so that they can address these issues in order to find resolution for the actual situations and circumstances within their lives which prompt their drug or alcohol use. This can truly save lives, not only the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but those that may be impacted by their drug or alcohol use if they drive while drunk or high in the foreseeable future. It is a real second opportunity for DUI/DWI clients.
