Dual diagnosis is a situation whereby two independent disorders are present, and most often describes a co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis may help an individual who might possibly not have been capable of being helped in the past, put an end to substance abuse because they can be correctly diagnosed and helped. Their mental health disorder may have been misdiagnosed, undiagnosed, or mistreated which could have triggered and resulted in their drug or alcohol use issues. Establishing the truth that someone is certainly a dual diagnosis client not merely helps establish an effective treatment plan for them, but can also help clients better determine what caused their drug abuse and the way to prevent it down the road. Addressing dual diagnosis is often a more extensive process than the usual typical drug rehab program, and folks with a dual diagnosis might need to take part in an extensive aftercare program which may include appropriate medical support in addition to continued rehab services. Being identified as having co-occurring disorders doesn't mean that the individual should be medicated through out their lives either, and in reality many individuals with a dual diagnosis experience more effective results when treated holistically and when alternative treatment methods are employed.
