Newberg - Dual Diagnosis

Dual diagnosis can be a situation whereby two independent disorders are present, and most often describes a co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis will help a person that might possibly not have been capable of being helped in the past, put an end to drug abuse by being correctly diagnosed and treated. Their mental health disorder could have been misdiagnosed, undiagnosed, or mistreated that may have triggered and led to their substance abuse problems. Establishing the fact someone is in fact a dual diagnosis client not simply helps establish a highly effective treatment plan for them, but will also help clients better determine what caused their drug abuse and how to prevent it later on. Addressing dual diagnosis may be a more extensive process than a typical drug rehab program, and individuals who have a dual diagnosis may need to take part in a substantial aftercare program that might include proper medical support as well as further rehab services. Being identified as having co-occurring disorders doesn't imply that the person must be medicated for the remainder of their lives either, and in fact many people who have a dual diagnosis experience more effective results when treated holistically and when alternative therapy is utilized.
