Dual diagnosis can be a circumstance in which two independent disorders are present, and most often denotes a co-occurring drug or alcohol use and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis will help an individual who might not have been capable of being helped during the past, put an end to drug abuse by being correctly diagnosed and treated. Their mental health disorder may have been misdiagnosed, not diagnosed at all, or mistreated which could have prompted and resulted in their drug or alcohol use issues. Establishing the truth that someone is actually a dual diagnosis client not only helps establish an efficient treatment course for them, but may also help clients better understand what caused their drug use and the way to prevent it down the road. Addressing dual diagnosis may be a more extensive process than a typical drug rehab program, and people with a dual diagnosis may need to participate in a substantial aftercare program which can include appropriate medical support as well as continued rehabilitation services. Being diagnosed with co-occurring disorders doesn't signify the individual should be medicated for the remainder of their lives either, and in fact many people who have a dual diagnosis experience much better outcomes when treated holistically and when alternative treatment solutions are employed.
