Dual diagnosis is a situation whereby two independent disorders are present, and most typically denotes a co-occurring drug or alcohol use and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis might help someone that might not have been capable of being helped in the past, put an end to drug abuse by being correctly diagnosed and treated. Their mental health disorder could have been misdiagnosed, not diagnosed at all, or mistreated which may have prompted and resulted in their substance abuse problems. Establishing the reality that someone is certainly a dual diagnosis client not just helps establish a highly effective course of treatment for them, but may also help clients better know what caused their drug use and how to prevent it in the future. Addressing dual diagnosis may be a more extensive process when compared to a typical drug rehab program, and individuals with a dual diagnosis may need to take part in an extensive aftercare program that might include proper medical support along with further treatment services. Being clinically determined to have co-occurring disorders doesn't mean that the person should be medicated for the rest of their lives either, and in fact many individuals with a dual diagnosis experience much better results when treated holistically and when alternative therapy is utilized.
