DUI/DWI clients who are involved in drug rehabilitation programs are generally there on their own accord, but generally in alcohol and drug treatment as part of a mandatory court order. DUI/DWI clients, particularly first-time offenders could possibly be required to go to treatment either instead of other penalties or as a part of a sentence. DUI/DWI clients can benefit greatly from treatment instead of being punished because of their crimes, and so can the court system. It has been determined that people who are treated for drug abuse issues rather than other penalties being enforced upon them have far better odds of remaining out of the court system than those who find themselves fined, ordered to prison time, etc. In alcohol and drug treatment centers DUI/DWI clients can establish why they abuse drugs and alcohol, to be able to address these issues in order to find resolution to the actual situations and circumstances within their lives which trigger their drug or alcohol use. This can truly save lives, not only the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but those that may be impacted by their drug abuse should they drive while drunk or high in the foreseeable future.
