DUI/DWI clients who are involved in alcohol and drug rehabilitation facilities are generally there by their own choice, but usually in alcohol and drug treatment as part of a mandatory court ruling. DUI/DWI clients, particularly first-time offenders might be required to go to rehabilitation either in place of other penalties or as a part of a sentence. DUI/DWI clients can benefit greatly from rehabilitation as opposed to being punished for his or her crimes, and so can the court system. It has been determined that people who are treated for drug abuse issues instead of other penalties being forced upon them have far better odds of remaining out of the court system than those who find themselves fined, ordered to prison time, etc. In alcohol and drug rehabilitation facilities DUI/DWI clients can determine why they abuse drugs and alcohol, so that they can address these issues and find resolution for the actual conditions and circumstances inside their lives which trigger their drug abuse. This could truly save lives, not only the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but those who may be affected by their drug abuse if they drive while drunk or high later on. It is a real second opportunity for DUI/DWI clients.
