DUI/DWI clients who are taking part in drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs are generally there on their own accord, but usually in drug treatment as part of a mandatory court ruling. DUI/DWI clients, especially first-time offenders could be required to go to treatment either in lieu of other consequences or as a part of a sentence. DUI/DWI clients can benefit greatly from treatment as opposed to being punished for his or her crimes, and so can the judicial system. It has been determined that people who are treated for substance abuse issues as opposed to other penalties being enforced upon them have much better chances of staying out from the courts than those who find themselves fined, ordered to time in jail, etc. In alcohol and drug treatment programs DUI/DWI clients can determine why they abuse drugs and alcohol, to enable them to address these issues and find resolution for the actual situations and circumstances within their lives which set off their drug abuse. This can certainly save lives, not just the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but people who may be affected by their drug or alcohol use if they drive while drunk or high in the future. This is a real second opportunity for DUI/DWI clients.
