Dual diagnosis can be a situation in which two independent disorders are present, and most often denotes a co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis may help someone who may possibly not have been able to be helped in the past, end drug or alcohol abuse by being accurately diagnosed and helped. Their mental health disorder may have been misdiagnosed, not diagnosed at all, or mistreated that could have prompted and resulted in their drug abuse problems. Establishing the truth that someone is actually a dual diagnosis client not just helps establish an efficient course of treatment for them, but can also help clients better determine what caused their substance abuse and the way to prevent it in the future. Addressing dual diagnosis might be a more extensive process than the usual typical drug rehab program, and people with a dual diagnosis might be required to participate in an extensive aftercare program which can include appropriate medical support in addition to further rehab services. Being identified as having co-occurring disorders doesn't mean that the individual will need to be medicated for the remainder of their lives either, and in fact lots of people who have a dual diagnosis experience far better outcomes when treated holistically and when alternative therapy is employed.
