DUI/DWI clients who're taking part in drug treatment programs are generally there by their own choice, but generally in drug rehabilitation due to a mandatory order from the court. DUI/DWI clients, particularly initial offenders may be required to go to rehabilitation either in lieu of other consequences or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients may benefit greatly from treatment as opposed to being punished for his or her crimes, and so can the judicial system. It has been established that people who are treated for drug or alcohol use issues as opposed to other penalties being forced upon them have much better odds of remaining out of the court system than people who find themselves fined, ordered to incarceration, etc. In drug and alcohol treatment programs DUI/DWI clients can establish why they abuse drugs and alcohol, to enable them to address these issues and find resolution for the actual conditions and circumstances inside their lives which set off their substance abuse. This may truly save lives, not only the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but people who may be impacted by their substance abuse should they drive while intoxicated in the future. This is a real second chance for DUI/DWI clients.
