DUI/DWI clients who are involved in drug and alcohol treatment programs are generally there by their own choice, but more often than not in alcohol and drug treatment as part of a mandatory court order. DUI/DWI clients, especially first-time offenders could be required to go to treatment either instead of other penalties or as a part of a sentence. DUI/DWI clients will benefit greatly from treatment as an alternative to being punished because of their crimes, and so can the judicial system. It has been established that people who are treated for drug abuse issues rather than other penalties being forced upon them have much better chances of staying out of the court system than those who are fined, ordered to prison time, etc. In alcohol and drug rehabilitation programs DUI/DWI clients can determine why they abuse alcohol and drugs, to be able to address these problems in order to find resolution to the actual situations and circumstances within their lives which set off their drug or alcohol use. This will certainly save lives, not only the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but people that may be affected by their drug or alcohol use whenever they drive while intoxicated down the road.
