Dual diagnosis can be a situation in which two independent disorders are present, and most often describes a co-occurring drug or alcohol use and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis will help a person that may not have been capable of being helped previously, end drug abuse because they can be properly diagnosed and helped. Their mental health disorder could have been misdiagnosed, not diagnosed at all, or treated incorrectly which may have triggered and resulted in their substance abuse issues. Establishing the reality that someone is actually a dual diagnosis client not merely helps establish an efficient treatment course for them, but will also help clients better know what triggered their drug abuse and how to prevent it later on. Handling dual diagnosis is often a more extensive process than the usual typical drug rehab program, and people with a dual diagnosis might be required to take part in a substantial aftercare program that might include proper medical support in addition to continued rehab services. Being diagnosed with co-occurring disorders doesn't mean that the person will need to be medicated for the rest of their lives either, and in reality a lot of people who have a dual diagnosis experience far better results when treated holistically and when alternative treatment solutions are employed.
