Dual diagnosis can be a circumstance in which two independent disorders are present, and most typically describes a co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis will help someone who might possibly not have been capable of being helped in the past, put an end to substance abuse because they can be accurately diagnosed and helped. Their mental health disorder may have been misdiagnosed, undiagnosed, or treated incorrectly that may have triggered and led to their substance abuse issues. Establishing the fact that someone is in fact a dual diagnosis client not merely helps establish a highly effective course of treatment for them, but may also help clients better determine what triggered their drug use and the way to prevent it in the foreseeable future. Addressing dual diagnosis can be a more extensive process than the usual typical drug rehab program, and people with a dual diagnosis may need to participate in a substantial aftercare program which can include appropriate medical support along with continued rehab services. Being diagnosed with co-occurring disorders doesn't imply that the person should be medicated for the rest of their lives either, and in reality many people who have a dual diagnosis experience more effective outcomes when treated holistically and when alternative treatment methods are utilized.
