DUI/DWI clients who're taking part in drug and alcohol treatment programs are either there on their own accord, but usually in drug rehabilitation as part of a mandatory court ruling. DUI/DWI clients, specifically initial offenders could be required to go to rehabilitation either in lieu of other penalties or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients may benefit greatly from rehabilitation as opposed to being punished because of their crimes, and so can the judicial system. It has been established that individuals who are treated for drug abuse issues rather than other penalties being forced upon them have far better chances of staying out of the court system than people who find themselves fined, ordered to time in jail, etc. In drug rehabilitation programs DUI/DWI clients can ascertain why they abuse drugs and alcohol, so that they can address these problems in order to find resolution for the actual conditions and circumstances in their lives which prompt their substance abuse. This could truly save lives, not just the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but those that may be impacted by their drug abuse if they drive while intoxicated in the foreseeable future. It's a real second opportunity for DUI/DWI clients.
