DUI/DWI clients that are involved in drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs are generally there by their own choice, but generally in drug treatment as part of a mandatory court order. DUI/DWI clients, especially initial offenders may be ordered to rehab either instead of other penalties or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients may benefit greatly from treatment rather than being punished for his or her crimes, and so can the court system. It has been determined that those who are treated for substance abuse issues as an alternative to other penalties being enforced upon them have far better odds of remaining out of the court system than those people who are fined, ordered to incarceration, etc. In drug and alcohol treatment programs DUI/DWI clients can ascertain why they abuse alcohol and drugs, to enable them to address these problems and find resolution to the actual conditions and circumstances inside their lives which trigger their drug or alcohol use. This may truly save lives, not just the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but people that may be affected by their drug or alcohol use should they drive while intoxicated in the foreseeable future. It is a real second chance for DUI/DWI clients.
