Dual diagnosis can be a circumstance in which two independent disorders exist, and most often denotes a co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis may help someone who may not have been capable of being helped during the past, put an end to drug abuse by being accurately diagnosed and treated. Their mental health disorder may have been misdiagnosed, undiagnosed, or treated incorrectly which may have prompted and resulted in their drug abuse issues. Establishing the fact that someone is in fact a dual diagnosis client not simply helps establish an effective course of treatment for them, but can also help clients better understand what caused their drug use and ways to prevent it in the future. Addressing dual diagnosis might be a more extensive process than a typical drug rehab program, and folks who have a dual diagnosis might need to take part in an extensive aftercare program which may include appropriate medical support along with continued rehab services. Being identified as having co-occurring disorders doesn't signify the person should be medicated through out their lives either, and actually lots of people who have a dual diagnosis experience more effective results when treated holistically and when alternative treatment solutions are utilized.
