DUI/DWI clients who are taking part in alcohol and drug rehab facilities are generally there by their own choice, but generally in drug rehab as part of a mandated court order. DUI/DWI clients, particularly initial offenders may be ordered to rehab either in lieu of other consequences or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients can benefit greatly from rehabilitation instead of being punished for their crimes, and so can the judicial system. It has been established that people who are treated for drug abuse issues instead of other penalties being forced upon them have far better odds of remaining out of the court system than those people who are fined, ordered to prison time, etc. In drug and alcohol treatment programs DUI/DWI clients can determine why they abuse drugs and alcohol, so that they can address these problems and find resolution for the actual conditions and circumstances inside their lives which trigger their substance abuse. This will certainly save lives, not just the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but people who may be affected by their drug or alcohol use should they drive while intoxicated in the foreseeable future. It is a real second opportunity for DUI/DWI clients.
