Dual diagnosis is a circumstance in which two independent disorders are present, and most often describes a co-occurring drug abuse and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis will help someone that might not have been able to be helped in the past, stop substance abuse by being accurately diagnosed and helped. Their mental health disorder might have been misdiagnosed, not diagnosed at all, or treated incorrectly which could have prompted and resulted in their substance abuse issues. Establishing the fact that someone is actually a dual diagnosis client not merely helps establish an effective treatment course for them, but can also help clients better determine what caused their drug use and ways to prevent it later on.
