Dual diagnosis is a situation whereby two independent disorders are present, and most often denotes a co-occurring drug abuse and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis may help a person that might possibly not have been able to be helped during the past, stop substance abuse because they can be correctly diagnosed and helped. Their mental health disorder might have been misdiagnosed, not diagnosed at all, or mistreated which could have prompted and led to their drug or alcohol use problems. Establishing the fact that someone is actually a dual diagnosis client not only helps establish a highly effective treatment course for them, but can also help clients better determine what triggered their drug abuse and how to prevent it later on. Handling dual diagnosis may be a more extensive process than the usual typical drug rehab program, and people with a dual diagnosis may need to participate in a substantial aftercare program which may include proper medical support and also continued rehab services. Being identified as having co-occurring disorders doesn't imply the individual will have to be medicated for the rest of their lives either, and in fact many people who have a dual diagnosis experience far better outcomes when treated holistically and when alternative treatment solutions are employed.
