Dual diagnosis is a circumstance in which two independent disorders exist, and most typically describes a co-occurring drug or alcohol use and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis will help someone who might possibly not have been able to be helped during the past, put an end to substance abuse by being correctly diagnosed and helped. Their mental health disorder may have been misdiagnosed, undiagnosed, or treated incorrectly that may have triggered and led to their drug abuse problems. Establishing the fact someone is actually a dual diagnosis client not simply helps establish an effective treatment plan for them, but may also help clients better know what led to their substance abuse and the way to prevent it in the future. Addressing dual diagnosis may be a more extensive process when compared to a typical drug rehab program, and people with a dual diagnosis may need to take part in an extensive aftercare program that might include appropriate medical support along with further rehab services. Being identified as having co-occurring disorders doesn't signify the individual will have to be medicated through out their lives either, and in fact a lot of people with a dual diagnosis experience far better outcomes when treated holistically and when alternative therapy is employed.
