DUI/DWI clients that are taking part in alcohol and drug treatment facilities are either there by their own choice, but generally in alcohol and drug treatment due to a mandatory court order. DUI/DWI clients, particularly first-time offenders could possibly be ordered to rehabilitation either in lieu of other consequences or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients will benefit greatly from treatment as opposed to being punished for their crimes, and so can the court system. It has been proven that individuals who are treated for substance abuse issues rather than other penalties being forced upon them have much better odds of staying out of the courts than those who are fined, ordered to prison time, etc. In drug rehabilitation programs DUI/DWI clients can ascertain why they abuse alcohol and drugs, so that they can address these issues in order to find resolution for the actual conditions and circumstances in their lives which trigger their substance abuse. This will truly save lives, not only the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but people that may be impacted by their drug or alcohol use if they drive while under the influence in the future.
