Dual diagnosis is a situation in which two independent disorders are present, and most often denotes a co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis might help someone who may not have been able to be helped previously, finish drug or alcohol abuse because they can be accurately diagnosed and helped. Their mental health disorder might have been misdiagnosed, undiagnosed, or treated incorrectly that could have prompted and led to their drug abuse problems. Establishing the truth that someone is in fact a dual diagnosis client not simply helps establish an efficient treatment plan for them, but will also help clients better determine what led to their drug abuse and ways to prevent it in the foreseeable future. Handling dual diagnosis is often a more extensive process than the usual typical drug rehab program, and people who have a dual diagnosis might be required to participate in a substantial aftercare program which might include proper medical support along with further treatment services. Being diagnosed with co-occurring disorders doesn't imply that the individual should be medicated for the rest of their lives either, and actually many people with a dual diagnosis experience more effective results when treated holistically and when alternative therapy is utilized.
