Outpatient treatment gives rehabilitation clients the opportunity to maintain certain obligations and elements of their lifestyle while taking part in drug rehabilitation services. Outpatient treatment is a moderate amount of treatment, and should not be mistaken for the amount of rehabilitation provided in an inpatient or residential treatment setting that is much more intensive. Outpatient treatment could be suited to a person who has a brief history of drug or alcohol use for instance, but will certainly not be adequate for someone whose treatment needs go beyond that which outpatient treatment is able to provide. Individuals dealing with drug abuse often need an extreme change of environment, because many of the things which prompt their drug abuse are purely environmental. For example, when someone has been physically or emotionally abused and this is triggering their drug abuse, there is no way for any rehab endeavours to have success if they return to such situations on a daily basis. In outpatient treatment, clients can take advantage of group and individual counseling, along with family counseling services. In outpatient treatment, most facilities will provide services 5 to 7 days per week on either a part time or full time basis for 1 month or longer in some instances.
