DUI/DWI clients that are taking part in drug and alcohol treatment programs are generally there on their own accord, but generally in alcohol and drug rehab due to a mandated court ruling. DUI/DWI clients, particularly first-time offenders may be ordered to treatment either in place of other consequences or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients may benefit greatly from rehabilitation as opposed to being punished for his or her crimes, and so can the judicial system. It has been determined that people who are treated for substance abuse issues as an alternative to other penalties being forced upon them have much better chances of remaining out of the courts than those who are fined, ordered to time in jail, etc. In drug rehabilitation centers DUI/DWI clients can ascertain why they abuse alcohol and drugs, so that they can address these problems and find resolution to the actual situations and circumstances inside their lives which prompt their substance abuse. This could certainly save lives, not only the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but those that may be affected by their drug or alcohol use when they drive while drunk or high in the future. This is a real second opportunity for DUI/DWI clients.
