Dual diagnosis can be a circumstance in which two independent disorders exist, and most typically denotes a co-occurring drug or alcohol use and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis may help an individual who might not have been able to be helped previously, stop drug abuse because they can be correctly diagnosed and helped. Their mental health disorder could have been misdiagnosed, undiagnosed, or mistreated which may have prompted and led to their substance abuse issues. Establishing the reality that someone is actually a dual diagnosis client not only helps establish a highly effective treatment course for them, but could also help clients better determine what led to their substance abuse and ways to prevent it in the foreseeable future. Handling dual diagnosis may be a more extensive process compared to a typical drug rehab program, and individuals who have a dual diagnosis may need to participate in a substantial aftercare program which might include proper medical support in addition to continued rehab services. Being identified as having co-occurring disorders doesn't signify the person will have to be medicated for the remainder of their lives either, and actually many individuals who have a dual diagnosis experience much better outcomes when treated holistically and when alternative therapy is employed.
