Dual diagnosis can be a situation whereby two independent disorders exist, and most often describes a co-occurring drug abuse and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis may help someone that may not have been able to be helped before, end drug abuse by being accurately diagnosed and treated. Their mental health disorder could have been misdiagnosed, not diagnosed at all, or mistreated which could have triggered and resulted in their drug or alcohol use problems. Establishing the truth that someone is certainly a dual diagnosis client not merely helps establish an efficient treatment course for them, but could also help clients better understand what led to their drug abuse and how to prevent it in the future. Addressing dual diagnosis may be a more extensive process than the usual typical drug rehab program, and folks with a dual diagnosis might be required to participate in a substantial aftercare program which may include proper medical support along with continued rehabilitation services. Being identified as having co-occurring disorders doesn't mean that the person will have to be medicated through out their lives either, and in reality a lot of people with a dual diagnosis experience far better results when treated holistically and when alternative treatment methods are employed.
