DUI/DWI clients that are taking part in drug treatment programs are either there by their own choice, but more often than not in drug and alcohol treatment due to a mandated court order. DUI/DWI clients, particularly first-time offenders could be ordered to treatment either instead of other consequences or as a part of a sentence. DUI/DWI clients may benefit greatly from rehabilitation rather than being punished for his or her crimes, and so can the judicial system. It has been verified that individuals who are treated for drug abuse issues instead of other penalties being enforced upon them have much better chances of staying out from the court system than those who find themselves fined, ordered to jail time, etc. In drug and alcohol treatment facilities DUI/DWI clients can establish why they abuse drugs and alcohol, so that they can address these issues and find resolution for the actual conditions and circumstances within their lives which trigger their drug abuse. This could certainly save lives, not just the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but people who may be impacted by their substance abuse should they drive while under the influence in the foreseeable future. It is a real second opportunity for DUI/DWI clients.
