DUI/DWI clients that are involved in drug treatment programs are generally there on their own accord, but generally in drug rehabilitation as part of a mandated court order. DUI/DWI clients, particularly initial offenders could be ordered to treatment either in place of other penalties or as a part of a sentence. DUI/DWI clients may benefit greatly from treatment as opposed to being punished for their crimes, and so can the court system. It has been established that individuals who are treated for drug or alcohol use issues as an alternative to other penalties being enforced upon them have much better chances of remaining out of the court system than those who are fined, ordered to prison time, etc. In alcohol and drug rehabilitation centers DUI/DWI clients can determine why they abuse drugs and alcohol, in order to address these issues and find resolution to the actual conditions and circumstances within their lives which prompt their substance abuse. This may truly save lives, not just the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but people who may be affected by their substance abuse whenever they drive while intoxicated later on. This is a real second opportunity for DUI/DWI clients.
