Dual diagnosis is a circumstance whereby two independent disorders exist, and most often denotes a co-occurring drug or alcohol use and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis may help a person that may not have been able to be helped during the past, stop drug or alcohol abuse by being correctly diagnosed and treated. Their mental health disorder might have been misdiagnosed, not diagnosed at all, or treated incorrectly which may have triggered and led to their drug or alcohol use problems. Establishing the fact that someone is actually a dual diagnosis client not only helps establish a highly effective course of treatment for them, but can also help clients better determine what led to their drug abuse and how to prevent it in the future. Addressing dual diagnosis can be a more extensive process than a typical drug rehab program, and people with a dual diagnosis might need to participate in an extensive aftercare program which can include proper medical support in addition to further treatment services. Being clinically determined to have co-occurring disorders doesn't imply that the person should be medicated for the rest of their lives either, and in reality lots of people who have a dual diagnosis experience much better results when treated holistically and when alternative therapy is employed.
